Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Network, Inc. (YTRN) was formed in 1999 by a group of friends who love Yorkies.  We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, all-volunteer, animal welfare organization dedicated to the well-being of Yorkshire Terriers and Yorkshire Terrier mixes.  We rescue, foster, rehabilitate and find permanent “second chance” homes for Yorkies throughout North Carolina, and in South Carolina towns near Charlotte.  Over the last eight years, YTRN has helped hundreds of Yorkies and Yorkie mixes find homes where they are loved and wanted.

You may wonder why a Yorkie would need to be rescued.  There are a lot of reasons...

Many of our dogs are “surrendered” to us.  Some come from wonderful homes, but have been given to us because their owner has died or gone into a nursing home or assisted living and can no longer take care of their dog, or they go into a facility that won’t accept pets.  Sometimes owners give up their Yorkies for personal reasons...they have a baby, they get divorced or married, or they move and can’t or don’t want to take their dog with them.  Some dogs come to us because “they got too big,” or because they have some behavior problems with which their owner doesn’t want to deal, or because the cute little puppy grew up into a dog whose wants and needs weren’t compatible with his family’s wants and needs.  Sometimes owners just get tired of the responsibilities that come with having a dog and they drop their Yorkie off at a shelter where we find and foster him.  Some of our Yorkies needed rescuing because they were lost and the owner couldn’t be found, while others were seized in raids on puppy mills where they lived in deplorable conditions, spending their lives having litter after litter of puppies. Some of the Yorkies we get have been greatly loved and cherished and some have been neglected or abused, but no matter how they come to us, we do our best to find every Yorkie a home where they’ll be treasured, compatible and accepted as a member of the family for the rest of their lives.  We accept all ages, sizes and medical conditions.  No Yorkie is ever turned away.

When a Yorkie is surrendered or rescued by YTRN, he/she is fostered for as long as necessary by one of our members, so we can evaluate their health and temperament and get a feel for their personality.  During this time the dog receives any required medical care and vaccinations, is spayed or neutered, has their teeth cleaned, is micro chipped, receives rehabilitation or behavioral training if necessary and then, when they’re ready, they’re placed for adoption into what we hope is a “forever” home.  Each adoption application is carefully assessed, so an owner and Yorkie are as perfectly matched as possible.

YTRN has members in Charlotte, Mooresville, Statesville, Greensboro, Winston Salem, Raleigh and Wilmington and Myrtle Beach.  If you live in North Carolina or the South Carolina towns near the Charlotte metro area and would like more information about Yorkie surrender, rescue, fostering, adoption or getting involved in Yorkie rescue by becoming a member of our group, we’d love to hear from you.
